  • Better off Dead?

I was talking to a pastor about two or three years ago about death.  He had just gone through a period of time, a few weeks I recon, where he had done a bunch of funeral services.  During the course of listening to his stories I contributed that it sounds like virtually every person who died was better off dead.  Not only that, but their families were going to be better off without them.

I always maintain that the loss of a human's life is tragic.  However from time to time I find relief when I hear that a particular person has finally died.  This was my reaction upon learning of Michael Jackson's death.  And it comes as no surprise to me that others believe this way too.

Are some people simply better off dead?  If not for their own sake but for the sake of those around them?

  • I'm driving down a dark street tonight and I see this giant thing flying around about 50' in front of my car (maybe more).  A few seconds after I see it, it makes a nose dive into somebody's yard and sits there for a second or two.  I keep driving and as I get closer it decides to take off.

What I see next is basically a giant bird flying perpendicular to my car - we are going to collide if somebody doesn't do something.

So I hit the breaks and the giant bird changes his course and is now parallel with me, flying right outside my passenger window.  I don't know for sure, but I think he was giving me the bird.

I never completely stopped when I hit the breaks so I keep going - looking at the bird I think, WTF, that looks like a Pelican.  But I'm in Kansas. This can't be.  The bird drops behind me, and I see in the rear view window that he has landed on the street behind me.  Out of a combination of sheer curiosity and a touch of concern that the bird might be injured, I turned around and drove back to see if he flies away and if he is the bird I think he is.

Well - I get a good look, and he does fly away.  I'm still not 100% sure, but I still think I almost hit a Pelican.  But what would a Pelican be doing in BFE Kansas?

  • CNN Headline: "President Obama signs a $787 billion stimulus bill he calls "the most sweeping economic recovery package in our history."

Wait a second.  Didn't president Bush (the bad president) just do the same thing a few weeks ago?
